Can the truck driver clearinghouse make roadways safer?

As a Missouri motorist, you may be used to driving alongside massive tractor trailers on a daily basis. Commercial vehicles are an integral part of the American economy, and people depend on them to transport vital goods throughout the state and across the country. Due to the sheer size, length and weight of tractor trailers, trained commercial truck operators are required to ensure trucks navigate the road safely around other motor vehicles. Yet, a surprising number of truckers operating these vehicles are not qualified, may have prior driving violations and may not have a commercial driver’s license at all.

The Commercial Driver’s License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse was established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and designed to provide a nation-wide database to track truckers who have driving violations. Employers are able to search the database and discover whether drivers applying for a position at the company or current drivers have been involved in any drunk, drowsy or drugged driving violations. The clearinghouse lists drivers who have a suspended CDL due to drug and/or alcohol problem, if they are enlisted in a rehabilitation program and whether the driver has been cleared to operate a commercial vehicle. Certain professionals have access to the system, including drug testing labs, medical review officers, truck company employers, substance abuse professionals and third-party administrators. All information stays within the system for at least five years. By keeping track of truck driver violations, officials may prevent the occurrence of catastrophic truck accidents.
