Understanding whiplash-associated disorders

Most people in Missouri have heard references to whiplash, often made in a joking manner when conversations about vehicle accidents are had. However, whiplash or whiplash-associated disorders really are no laughing matters. Understanding what whiplash really is and what it may contribute to is important for anyone who might find themselves in a crash, no matter how minor it may seem at first.

As explained by WebMD, whiplash can result when the muscles or the tendons in the neck area have been damaged. The tendons are the mechanisms by which muscles are held to the bones. This is called a neck strain. A neck sprain, in contrast, involves tearing of the ligaments. The ligaments actually hold bones together.

According to VeryWellHealth.com, whiplash may be associated with more serious conditions like a herniated disc. This is one of the reasons that people should seek medical attention after a collision occurs, even if they do not believe that any injury has been experienced at first. Sometimes, the symptoms associated with whiplash or a whiplash-associated disorder may not be evident for a few days after the event that instigated it.

Neck injuries like whiplash can interfere with a person's daily life and cause ongoing headaches, reduced range of motion and chronic pain. Other people might feel dizzy or even experience a tingling sensation in their necks. Managing the symptoms of whiplash may entail the use of pain relief medications but some people find that treatments like massages, ultrasound and other techniques can also be beneficial to them.
