Why is the post-holiday season full of personal injury lawsuits?

The weeks between Thanksgiving Day and New Year's Eve see a higher rate of personal injuries, many of which result from alcohol. After the holiday season, many people must recover from overindulging in food, drink and revelry. However, others must recover from a much more serious ailment: an injury that occurred over the holidays.

The period after the holidays is a common time for personal injury lawsuits. Some of the most common post-holiday injuries that result in lawsuits include:

  • Motor vehicle accidents

Some revelers make the poor decision to imbibe too much alcohol during their festivities. This can lead to motor vehicle accidents that injure the driver, passenger, pedestrians or other motorists. An accident-even a minor one-may necessitate legal action against the liable party or the insurance company.

  • Slip-and-falls

Icy walkways or other slippery terrain can lead to slip-and-fall accidents. These occur far more frequently than many people realize. They can lead to serious head, neck and back injuries that require expensive medical treatment.

  • Physical altercations

Holiday parties often combine alcohol with heated conversations. This can prompt some partygoers to lose their tempers and start a physical altercation. These situations sometimes result in criminal charges. They can also result in a civil lawsuit to recover damages for medical treatment and pain and suffering.

Lawsuits: Not fun, but necessary

Injuries do not make good holiday gifts. Nobody's new year should have to start out with seeking medical treatment, paying expensive bills and considering a lawsuit. Unfortunately, many people throughout Kansas no doubt suffered from such an injury over the holidays. And sometimes, lawsuits are sometimes the only way to obtain monetary compensation for injury-related damages.
