Serious crash near Arnold illustrates dangers for motorcyclists

Motorcyclists in Missouri and elsewhere have a saying: “It’s not if you crash, it’s when.” Motorcyclists understand that they face great risks when they ride, and most take these risks seriously. Unfortunately, the best precautions don’t always protect bikers from the negligent actions of other drivers. A recent motorcycle accident that occurred outside the Arnold city limits shows the unexpected, serious dangers that motorcyclists face whenever they are on the road.

Leader Publications reported on the crash, during which a woman who had stopped to turn left into a private drive failed to yield to an oncoming motorcyclist. The biker struck the rear of the woman’s SUV as she turned, which resulted in him receiving serious injuries. After the crash, another driver was unable to avoid the motorcycle in the road, and he received injuries, as well.

The prognosis of the motorcyclist’s injuries was unknown, but he is reported to be hospitalized in serious condition. It was unknown whether the SUV driver did not notice the oncoming biker or underestimated the speed or distance at which he was traveling. However, the accident drives home the point that drivers need to be aware of their surroundings and show caution and courtesy to motorcyclists sharing the road.

Motorcycle enthusiasts can significantly increase their safety by wearing protective gear, especially helmets, and obeying traffic rules. However, they cannot prevent the negligent actions of other drivers or predict when an accident will occur. Those who are injured by others may be eligible for compensation.
