Missouri man killed in hit-and-run accident

Fatal motor vehicle accidents in Missouri are horrific enough, but drivers who leave the scene of an accident make matters worse, not only for themselves but for anyone injured and in need of help in the wake of a collision. A 44-year-old Kansas City man compounded a fatal motor vehicle accident on Sunday by leaving the scene of an accident in which the operator of a tow truck died. He now faces class D felony charges for the offense.

The accident occurred as the operator of the tow truck was getting back into the cab of his vehicle after loading a broken-down automobile onto his truck. The driver who struck him admitted to leaving the scene without stopping. Toxicology results are still pending, but the driver claimed to have ingested six or seven Coronas prior to the accident. In addition, due to a revoked driver's license, he was operating his vehicle illegally.

At present, no court date is set, and court records show no attorney listed in association with the case, but the driver's bond is $50,000.

In a tragic twist, the tow truck operator's employer lost her own son in a similar accident six years ago. Her son, 19 years old at the time, was also a tow truck driver struck and killed while assisting a stranded motorist.

Missouri has a law on the books requiring drivers to move over for emergency vehicles along the side of the road, but the owner of the tow truck company believes stricter enforcement would help to prevent more deaths. In any case, family members of those killed in motor vehicle accidents may wish to consult a lawyer regarding damages.
