Take these actions if you're in a car accident

Car accidents take a toll on your body and mind. In the minutes, and even days, after the crash, you might be dealing with a concussion or other symptoms that make it hard for you to think and focus. There are some things that are imperative to take care of after a crash.

Some of the steps apply regardless of the severity of the crash. Others might only be relevant to certain wrecks. Determining which apply to your case can be difficult, so be sure to take care of the applicable ones.

Contact the authorities

Calling the police department, either directly or through the emergency line, lets them know about the accident and will get an officer dispatched to your location. This enables you to get an accident report that might be beneficial later. You can let the dispatcher know if you need a paramedic to come to the scene.

Get medical assistance

Whether you need urgent medical care or plan on going to the doctor on your own, ensure you get the assistance you need. Not only does this help you to get treatment for injuries, it also ties the accident to the injuries. These medical records can help you if you choose to pursue a claim for compensation.

Plan your statements carefully

Think about what you are going to say about the accident. You do need to be truthful about what happened, but you can't admit liability. Apologizing for the accident can be construed as an admission of guilt. Anything of that sort can work against you if you decide to seek damages from the person who hit you.

Document the specifics

The more details you have about the car wreck, the better prepared you will be to file a claim. You do have to deal with the insurer, but your attorney can handle this for you. If you can, take pictures of the accident and write down what you can remember as quickly as possible after the crash. Having these to refer to later can keep your memory sharp. It can also show others what happened, which can help you if your accident claim goes to a jury trial.
