KNOW YOUR HIPAA RIGHTS IN 2017

A new year means a new commitment to health for many people. But health encompasses more than just exercise. You should also be committed to the safety and privacy of your health records.

Even with the increase in audits planned for 2017, violations still happen. There are over 180 different areas that may be addressed in an audit. Even so, some organizations still only apply a high-level overview which is not enough. Health care providers must organize all relevant documentation and have training programs created and in place to ensure that employees, contractors, and partners are aware of compliance and their role in it.

Regardless, it is wise to still be aware of your rights under HIPAA.

  • You have a right to see and get a copy of your health records.
  • You hold the key to your health information and can send or have it sent to anyone you want. Only send your health information to someone you trust.
  • Your provider is no longer responsible for the security of your health information after it is sent to a third party.
  • Protect your information with passwords. Store your printed copies of health information in a safe place.

It's also important to know what information is protected.

  • Information your doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers put in your medical record
  • Conversations your doctor has about your care or treatment with nurses and others
  • Information about you in your health insurer's computer system
  • Billing information about you at your clinic
  • Most other health information about you held by those who must follow these laws
